Materials:
· A piece of paper or a paper plate
· A marker or something else to write with
· Cereal pieces to trace the letters with
· For children with lower vision, the written letters of the child’s name could be reinforced by something they could feel, such as lines of glue dried in advance, or even cotton balls.
Activity:
1) Write your child’s name out in BIG letters and read it out loud to them.
2) Take pieces of cereal and line them along the shape of the letters in the name, and encourage them to join you in this game. This is a great pre-reading activity, as well as eye-hand coordination practice.
3) As you work together, talk about what you’re doing, how the cereal feels, the color of the plate, or anything else nearby. Make sure to let your child practice some of this language for his or herself.
Eat the cereal together and do it again!
